How many tiles do I need?
Divide the total area (in square feet) by the area of one tile (in square feet), then multiply by 1 plus your waste percentage. Always round up to whole tiles. For a 120 sq ft room with 12×12 inch tiles and 10% waste, you need 132 tiles.
How much extra tile should I buy for waste and cuts?
Add 10% for a standard straight lay, 15–20% for diagonal layouts or large-format tiles (18×18 or bigger), and up to 25% for intricate patterns or rooms with many corners. Having a few extra tiles on hand also helps if you ever need to replace a cracked tile later.
How do I calculate tile for a backsplash or wall?
The method is the same: measure the wall area in square feet (height × width, subtract windows and doors), then divide by the tile area and apply a waste factor. For mosaic sheets, use the sheet dimensions rather than individual tile dimensions.
