How much gravel do I need?
Multiply the area (length × width in feet) by the depth in feet (inches ÷ 12), then divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. For example, a 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards of gravel.
How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
Roughly 1.4 tons for typical pea gravel or crushed gravel. Exact weight varies by material: sand runs about 1.35 t/yd³, crushed stone about 1.5 t/yd³, and topsoil around 1.1 t/yd³. Use the material selector above to match your project.
How deep should a gravel layer be?
For paths and top-dressing, 2–3 inches is usually enough. Driveways over existing compacted base need at least 4 inches; a new driveway without a base should have 6–8 inches of compacted gravel. Drainage applications may need 12 inches or more.
