What is a board foot?
A board foot is a unit of volume for lumber equal to 144 cubic inches — equivalent to a piece of wood 1 foot long, 1 foot wide, and 1 inch thick. It is the standard unit used in North America for buying and selling rough lumber.
How do you calculate board feet?
Multiply the nominal thickness in inches by the width in inches by the length in feet, then divide by 12. For example, a 1-inch thick, 6-inch wide, 8-foot long board contains 1 × 6 × 8 ÷ 12 = 4 board feet.
Is a board foot the same as a linear foot?
No. A linear foot (also called a running foot) measures only the length of a board regardless of its thickness or width. A board foot measures volume, so it accounts for all three dimensions. A 10-foot long 2×4 and a 10-foot long 2×8 are the same in linear feet but very different in board feet.
