Frequently Asked Questions
What tax bracket am I in for 2025?
Your tax bracket is the highest rate that applies to your taxable income. For 2025 the brackets are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%, with the thresholds depending on your filing status. Enter your income above and the calculator highlights your bracket.
Does being in a higher bracket mean all my income is taxed at that rate?
No β this is the most common misconception. The US has a progressive system: each bracket's rate applies only to the portion of income within that bracket. If you're 'in the 24% bracket,' your first dollars are still taxed at 10%, 12%, and 22%. Only income above the 24% threshold is taxed at 24%.
What's the difference between marginal and effective rate?
Marginal rate is your top bracket β the rate on your next dollar earned. Effective rate is your total tax divided by total income, which is always lower. The marginal rate matters for decisions like a raise or extra deduction; the effective rate reflects your overall tax burden.
Are tax brackets based on gross income or taxable income?
Taxable income β your gross income minus deductions (such as the standard deduction). By default this calculator subtracts the 2025 standard deduction for your filing status, but you can toggle that off if you already know your taxable income.
Why do the brackets differ by filing status?
Married-filing-jointly brackets are roughly double the single brackets at the lower rates, and head-of-household brackets fall in between, reflecting household size and combined incomes. Pick the status that matches your return.
