Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles are sold and measured in squares. A 2,000 sq ft roof (measured flat) might be 22–24 squares after accounting for pitch and waste.
How much waste factor should I add?
Standard practice is to add 10–15% for a simple gable roof, 15–20% for hips and valleys, and up to 25% for complex roofs with many cuts. It's better to have leftover shingles than run short mid-job.
How do I measure roof pitch?
Pitch is expressed as rise over run — for example, a 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. You can measure this with a level and tape measure from inside the attic or on the roof itself.
How many bundles of shingles per square?
Standard 3-tab and architectural shingles typically come 3 bundles per square. Some premium shingles may require 4 bundles per square — always check the manufacturer's specification.
