How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator (the product of the two denominators always works), rewrite each fraction over that denominator, add the numerators, then simplify. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. This calculator does all of that for you and reduces the result.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 6/8 has a GCD of 2, so it simplifies to 3/4. The calculator always returns the answer in lowest terms.
How do I multiply and divide fractions?
To multiply, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: 2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 × 4/3 = 8/9.
What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, like 1 1/2. An improper fraction such as 3/2 (where the numerator is larger than the denominator) can always be written as a mixed number. This calculator shows both forms of the answer.
