Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 4% rule?
The 4% rule says you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio in year one and adjust for inflation each subsequent year. Historically, this withdrawal rate has lasted at least 30 years across most market conditions, making it a practical planning benchmark.
What is a FIRE number?
Your FIRE number is the portfolio size at which investment returns can cover your annual spending indefinitely. At a 4% safe withdrawal rate, it equals your desired annual spending multiplied by 25.
Should I use a real or nominal return?
Use a real (after-inflation) return so the result is expressed in today's dollars. If you expect a 7% nominal return and 2% inflation, enter 5% here. This keeps the FIRE number and your current savings on the same purchasing-power basis.
