How do I calculate the cost to run an appliance?

Divide the appliance's wattage by 1,000 to get kilowatts, then multiply by the hours you run it per day and by your electricity rate ($/kWh). For example, a 100 W device run 5 hours/day at $0.17/kWh costs 0.1 kW Γ— 5 h Γ— $0.17 = $0.085 per day.

Where do I find an appliance's wattage?

Check the nameplate label on the back or bottom of the appliance β€” it lists watts (W) or amps (A) and volts (V). If it shows amps and volts, multiply them: watts = volts Γ— amps. Many manufacturers also publish wattage in the product spec sheet.

What is a kWh?

A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the unit your utility bills you for. It equals one kilowatt (1,000 W) of power consumed for one hour. So a 1,000 W appliance run for one hour uses exactly 1 kWh; a 100 W appliance needs 10 hours to use 1 kWh.
